The Devil's Club Blues lets some wilderness into the classic gypsy jazz repertoire, introducing original songs and unexpected arrangements that push the genre into fresh territory. Jackie Schafer's vocals, alternatively tender and brassy, ring with the sassy confidence that comes from countless hours of serenading fishermen in Alaskan bars. Guitarists Tovi Newman and Forest Wilson, both born and raised in Alaska, bring their shared, quirky sense of humor to their guitar arrangements, somehow making classic rock and classical riffs sound at home in the jazz repertoire. Logan Bean's playful horn and Joe Eunice on bass round out this gathering of the 49th state's most promising young jazz players. While the album blends traditions, it evokes a startling sense of place--somewhere between Anchorage and Paris, where a crowd is gathering around a guitar.
